Wednesday Worship Minute

Lord, I love You and I worship You, You are worthy to be praised                                                          Lord, I love You and I worship You, You are worthy to be praised                                            Lord, I love You and I worship You, You are worthy to be praised                                                             You are worthy, worthy, worthy to be praised

The above lyrics were written back in 1987 by Rich Cook, and I first heard them sung by Christ Church Choiras a worship interlude between two other songs on their album. I have never forgotten them! They’re not fancy or flowery, and the melody isn’t particularly creative or difficult, but I can still hear those voices in my mind, worshiping God even in the moments between songs.  I don’t know if it was spontaneous worship and the producers just decided to let the choir keep going and add it to the record along with the rest of the tracks, or if it was planned. I do know that those four lines can still usher me into God’s presence in worship 40 years later. Here’s another one:

Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul. Thank You, Lord, for making me whole.                        Thank You, Lord, for giving to me Thy great salvation so rich and free.

This one was written in 1940 by Bessie and Seth Sykes as the chorus to their hymn, and it is still in the Baptist Hymnal, 2008 version, although without the verses. Again, it is a basic tune paired with simple words, but it is powerful!

I try hard not to let my mind drift. I read and hear and see so many things in this life that are not beneficial to repeat or relive in my mind, and memorized songs like these are my go-to to help me refocus on God and my relationship with Him. Those little songs can crowd out big stressors, bad memories, unkind words, and unhealthy self-criticism, and they draw my thoughts right back to my holy, awesome, righteous and EVERPRESENT God, where they belong. Practicing this regularly helps me fulfill Paul’s command from Philippians 4:8,9 – “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, (let your mind) dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

See you on Sunday for worship!
